The Union features rooms and artworks reflecting the local heritage, the largest being Der Rathskeller, a German-style beer hall with elaborate murals where political debates and card or board games are common among students over a stein of beer. The Wisconsin Union Directorate funds music on the Terrace four nights a week in the summer and on the Terrace or in Der Rathskeller on weekends during the school year. Located outside the Memorial Union, the student center that was opened in 1928, the Terrace is a stone dining and recreational area that is a popular gathering place for students and local residents for socializing because of the backdrop of the lake, with its view of sailboats and the sound of live music. Located at 800 Langdon Street, on the shore of Lake Mendota, on the university campus, it is a popular outdoor space that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. Like Chicago has Lake Michigan, the University of Wisconsin has Lake Mendota-and the Memorial Union Terrace. The University of Wisconsin in Madison boasts one of the most beautiful campuses of any university in the United States. The gardens consist of several areas, including The Sunken Gardens in the form of a traditional English garden that contains an 80-foot-long reflecting pool, a Rock Garden designed to simulate a mountain slope with conifers, alpine, two streams and a waterfall, a Rose Garden and a Meadow Garden with perennial grasses and wildflowers. There also is a koi pond featuring koi, goldfish, frogs, toads and geckos. In addition to the tropical plants, the conservatory is home to species of birds, including canaries, waxbills, diamond doves, Gouldian finches and owl finches. The Bolz Conservatory is a greenhouse, a glass pyramid measuring 100 by 100 feet and rising to 50 feet at the apex, that houses over 750 plants representing over 70 families and over 550 different species and cultivars. Opened in 2002, it is one of only six Thai sala outside of Thailand and one of two in the United States. Founded in 1952 and named for its founder, Michael Olbrich, the property is noted for the Bolz Conservatory and a Thai sala, a gift to the University of Wisconsin-Madison from the Thai Chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association and the government of Thailand through its king, Bhumiibol Adulyadej. Located at 3330 Atwood Avenue, the 16-acre outdoor botanical garden and 10,000-square-foot conservatory features some of the most unique exhibits in the United States. Any visit to Madison, Wisconsin, wouldn't be complete with a stroll through Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
